Innocence
Fountain By J.W. Fiske
Innocence was the central figure
in a fountain design within the Horticultural
Building of the World's Columbian Exposition,
World's Fair, Chicago 1893. The graceful young
woman holds a long flowing fabric over her head.
It drapes around her torso seeming to move as
she appears to step from a large shell. The shell
is held by two cherubic boys riding Gothic grotesque
dolphins. The boys are blowing conch shells which
are piped to spout water upwards towards the young
woman. The two dolphins also spout water upwards
creating the illusion of movement as she seems
to step from the shell, her long hair and the
draped fabric flowing behind her. The plaque on
the base is a rounded rectangle that reads: "J.W.
FISKE 2628 PARKPLACE NEW YORK".
